چکیده

The theory of compensating differentials has proven difficult to test with observational data: the consequences of selection, unobserved firm and worker characteristics, and the broader macroeconomic environment complicate most analyses. Instead, we construct experimental, real-effort labor markets and offer an evaluation of the theory in a controlled setting. We study both the wage differentials that evolve between firms with varying degrees of disamenity and how these differentials are affected by worker mobility and therefore selection. Consistent with the theory, we find that riskier firms must pay significantly higher wages to attract workers. Further, when workers are mobile, they sort into firms according to their attitudes towards risk and, as a result, the compensating differential shrinks. Last, we are also able to mimic the biases associated with observational studies. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Intra-Regional Amenities, Wages, and Home Prices: The Role of Forests in the Southwest

Forests provide non-market goods and services that people are implicitly willing to pay for through hedonic housing and labor markets. But it is unclear if compensating differentials arise in these markets at the regional level. This empirical question is addressed in a study of Arizona and New Mexico. Hedonic regressions of housing prices and wages using census and geographic data show that fo...

A multi-disciplinary interpretation of migration: amenity capitalization in both land and labor markets.

"Various disciplines have produced models to explain and predict human migration. A model is presented providing a taxonomy through which interdisciplinary insights can be synthesized. The imperfect information view emphasizes the role of wage differentials as representing arbitragible real utility differentials. The perfect information approach holds that wage and rent differentials are com...

Compensation of Regional Unemployment in Housing Markets

Why are regional unemployment differentials in Europe so persistent if, as the wage curve literature demonstrates, there is no compensation in labour markets? We hypothesize that workers in high-unemployment regions are compensated in housing markets. Modelling regional unemployment differentials as a consequence of centralized wage bargaining, we show that clearing of land markets may undo the...

Neoclassical Models of Imperfectly Competitive Labor Markets

The scenario of perfect competition, as augmented by human capital theory, yields a large body of testable hypotheses concerning labor market outcomes. These hypotheses, overviewed in the first chapter of this volume, might all be understood as applications of three more fundamental implications of perfectly competitive equilibrium conditions: no unemployment or vacancies, the law of one wage, ...

Looking for jobs with good pay and good working conditions

In perfectly competitive labour markets, there is a market for non-material job amenities in which workers’ willingness to pay for these goods implies that workers accept compensating wage differentials, such that jobs with better working conditions should have lower wages. In labour market characterised by frictions, workers’ wages typically depend also on firm productivity. However many job c...
